Session 1

Oracle Stretched Clusters: Zero Downtime, Zero Data Loss with Oracle StandardEdition.

Summary

You want hundred percent uptime and zero percent data loss? Minimum Oracle licence cost: $282k, for RAC and Data Guard. Or perhaps not. We can do it for one eighth of that, by using a stretched cluster: Oracle Standard Edition, RAC and ASM.

Abstract

Data Guard is Oracle's flagship product for zero data loss. The good news: it works, and you will never lose one row of committed data. Not so good: you must license a separate machine. And you need Enterprise Edition, not Standard Edition, both sides: this is expensive.

RAC is the product for high availability: zero downtime. More good news: RAC works great and is included with Standard Edition! But if you choose Enterprise Edition to get Data Guard, the problem is financial: it is a 50% uplift on your EE licenses, and you need two of them.

So, to add the RAC and Dataguard fault tolerance means upgrading it from SE to EE, and buying the same again for the Data Guard machine. Then add 50% extra to upgrade to RAC. Finally double it, to give you two machines at each site. Result:  This can cost more than fifteen times the SE price.

Our alternative is the stretched cluster. This you can do this with two Standard Edition licences, total $35k. RAC is bundled with SE, so no problems with 100% uptime. And rather than EE Data Guard, we use ASM mirroring to maintain two copies of the database, at remote sites. This gives you 0% data loss.

This presentation will summarize RAC and Data Guard, and the stretched cluster alternative. You can get one heck of a lot of computing power and high availability for a pretty low investment - if you let us exploit the SE capabilities.

Session 2

Understanding Oracle 11g Editions, Features, Options and Costs

Learn the difference between Express Edition, Standard Edition, Standard Edition One and Enterprise Edition and about advanced features such as RAC and Enterprise Edition Options including Management Packs, Partitioning and Advanced Security.

And, learn how Standard Edition, especially on a SPARC T3 series server, provides fantastic amount of database resources at a very reasonable cost..

Session 3

Oracle Application Express: What Every Oracle Shop Should Know About Web Application Development

Summary

If you own an Oracle Database license, you already own a great web application development tool. Learn what's so great about Application Express and what can be done with it.

Abstract

Since its introduction in 2004, Oracle Application Express (APEX) has provided an easy-to-use platform to develop web based applications that are both scalable and secure. APEX is a no-cost option of the Oracle database and is included with every version – even XE. In this session, you will learn the basics of APEX via a high level overview of its major components. Next, you will see just how easy web application development can be as a basic application is built live. Finally, you will learn how far the tool can go as we explore some of the ways that people are putting it to use.
