Oracle Database 12c Administration Workshop Level 1:
4 Day Onsite or 28 Hour Online Hands-On Training

This course provides you with the skills necessary to create, maintain and manage an Oracle 12c database.  In this class you will concentrate on the skills and best practices required for day-to-day database administration tasks such as security, creating and managing users, space management, administering undo and redo, running utilities, configuring Oracle networking, and simple backup and recovery techniques.  An in-depth discussion of Oracle 12c database architecture is also provided.

The course is run on the current release of database 12c, but the instructors will aways "back-port" the course to 11g and earlier where behaviour has significantly changed.

The course book is the Oracle Press guide for the Oracle Certified Associate DBA examination, which was written by us for Oracle Press. Working examples are included throughout the course book. Students have access to electronic versions of all examples, sample scripts and lab solutions.  Approximately 33% of class time is spent on hands-on exercises.

Compared to the Oracle University courses "Oracle Database 12c: Administration Workshop" and "Oracle Database 12c: Install and Upgrade Workshop" our class is

  • More complete in breadth and depth of subjects covered
  • Omits superficial coverage of Cloud Control, Grid Infrastructure, and ASM
  • Utilizes command line techniques rather than graphical tools
  • Less expensive
  • Taught by an instructor you can talk to before class.  Call (888) 803-5607.
The delivery of this course was probably the best out of several online courses I have attended. Everything worked well.
[Instructor: John Watson] This course was definitely not light on content (like several courses - not skillbuilders, of course - that I have attended). It is nice to get that much value out of a week-long training.

The online course delivery is great!

The course book is very well organized, and provides great information about Oracle. Dave is a great instructor and mentor, very knowledgeable and also patient with my questions.

The contents were fine with time allocated.

Use of Paint as a white board was good, as was use of Powerpoint to show the Oracle process for commit. Also, it was good that the second instructor (Dave A) could update the chat, re-enforcing the points made by John.

the instructors were patienct...it was good

The instructor. Very knowledgeable.

Little more time for to complete the lessons. Some of the topics like backups were briefly discussed due to the size of the topic. Maybe allow more time for this area and shorten other areas like tables?

The online format works well with a small group. But I would invest in a shared whiteboard app to make drawings easier and interactive. Even something simple like awwapp.com or flockdraw.com would be better than Paint.

[Instructor: John Watson] Good review of the basics. I got my initial [Oracle Database Administration] training over four years ago as a neophyte, so I was looking primarily for "tips and tricks" to help me with my better understanding. Happily, John delivered; he has many "old school" techniques which are useful in any Oracle environment.

The exercises were great, but there simply wasn't enough time to cover all the material and do the exercises. I was using my break time to work on them. We are also working DBAs, and the last two hours of the classes are hard to pay attention to when you have urgent work queued up.

So, I would consider changing the schedule of the course to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for six hours each day over a period of two weeks. This would give 36 hours of instruction time. On Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, we, the students, would make time to do our exercises as homework, and review the results during the next class.

I would also set up a "Final Exam": the instructor will break our student databases, and we have to diagnose and fix the database. This kind of challenge will help to maintain focus.

[Instructor: Geoff Wiland] Geoff was very enthusiastic.

G Sully Sullivan Infinera
[Instructor: Geoff Wiland] Instructor was very knowledgeable and adjusted to challenges posed by our non-standard Oracle deployment configurations.

Michael Hui
[Instructor: Geoff Wiland] describes many areas of oracle in short concise sections

Sung Chung Infinera
[Instructor: Geoff Wiland] It was great that we were given background info and then were able to apply it to our application.

Another course in Solaris applying it to our application would be great.
