Recent consulting assignments and projects completed by SkillBuilders include:

  • Completed migration of Oracle10g Release 1 database and ASM instance to Oracle10g Release 2.   See Dave's article documenting the upgrade process
  • Remotely provided advice for corrupt log data on Oracle10g Release 2 in time for critical production migration for an Web-based arena ticketing application database.  This service was requested just hours before the migration;  we were able to respond immediately to the customer's request.  Also remotely monitored production Oracle database with AWR and ADDM after production migration;  provided backup and recovery strategy using Oracle RMAN;  provided temporary Oracle DBA services while primary Oracle DBA was unavailable and advised on several other Oracle administration issues
  • Dave recently completed migrating a health care database from Oracle 8.1.7 to 9.2.0.  This work was done entirely remote, on time and under budget - saving our customer lots of money!  Tasks included installing Oracle9i, applying patches, migrating test data, enabling system for testing, migrating production data and providing complete documentation.
  • Provided DB2, ORACLE , and IMS DBA skills in a large medical complex. Responsibilities included training new DBAs in Oracle and DB2, logical and physical design of a new clinical data repository using the ERWin data modeling tool, installation and testing of ORACLE and DB2, migration of MVS/ESA DBMSs (IMS and DB2) to OS/390, evaluation of DB2 Universal, replication of centralized DB2 repository data to Oracle databases at associated hospitals, and the development of Java web applications accessing ORACLE and DB2 databases via JDBC. Also provided due diligence assessments of HIPAA compliance for existing in-house written applications as well as vendor supplied software.
  • Provided XML, Java, and Oracle programming and mentoring for the  "distance learning" applications at the main campus library of a large state university.
  • Conversion of an existing MVS-based DB2 application to Oracle running on VAX/VMS OS for a large reinsurance company.  Tens of thousands of lines of COBOL code (Pro COBOL) and utilities were converted on-time and under-budget.  Trained staff on application architecture.  Provided Oracle mentoring and technical support to company employees.
  • Currently providing all database administration functions to SkillBuilders Linux-based web site Oracle database.  Currently (Dec 04) migrating to 10g using Automatic Storage Management for disk and volume management.
  • Implemented support - in a 100 million row DB2 data warehouse - for the co-branding of the Shell Oil credit card with the bank's VISA card.  Responsible for the design, creation and modification of all database objects, scheduling and running all utilities, creating on-line user interfaces, solving user problems, tuning and coordination of application programming efforts for DB2 load files. Also established an in-house DB2 user-group and developed an on-line problem reporting system.
  • Implemented and customized an online stock replenishment system application for a large international cosmetics company.
